Want to boost engagement in mental math? Speedy Rabbit’s multiplayer mode makes it happen! Turn your next review into a motivating classroom tournament. Find out how!

How to Organize a Tournament in Class?

What You’ll Need

  • 1 device (tablet or computer) per team
  • Stations where teams can compete against each other (1 station per 2 teams)
  • 1 score board per team (see appendix)
  • Internet access

Station Setup

  • Place 2 devices at each station so that two teams (A and B) are always competing against each other at the same station.

Team Selection & Organization

  • Pair up your students (trios are fine if you have an odd number).
  • Provide each group with a score board.
  • Ask teams to come up with a creative name and write it on their sheet.

The Game Plan

Round One

  • Place 2 teams (Teams A and B) at each station to compete against each other.
  • Each team launches the Speedy Rabbit game and selects multiplayer mode.
  • One team per station, chosen at random:
    • selects the "Create a Group" option;
    • shares the generated code with the other team;
    • selects the grade level;
    • starts the game.
  • The other team selects the "Join a Group" option and enters the code provided.
  • Start the race!
  • Once the race is over, each team records their score on their score board.
    • Students may raise their hands to let the teacher know they have finished.
  • The two teams face off in 4 more games, for a total of 5 games.

Note: It is possible for two teams to have the same score at the end of a game.

Round Two

  • At random, one of the teams (A or B) moves to another station to face a new team.
  • Repeat the steps from the first round.

Round Three

  • Repeat the steps from the second round.
  • Calculate the grand total of points and hand in the score board to the teacher.

Final Round

  • The 4 teams with the highest scores will face off to determine the winning team.
Tips and tools

Here are a few tips to ensure your classroom tournament runs smoothly:

  • Run a practice round: Organize a friendly match to ensure everything is working correctly and take the opportunity to demonstrate the game's features.
    • Introduce multiplayer mode early: Show the multiplayer mode to your students a few days before the tournament so they can get used to the pace and functionality of the game.
    • Use full-screen mode: For the best experience, encourage students to play in full-screen mode.
    • No login required: It is not necessary to log in to an account to play.
    • Highlight the scoring: Point out to your students where the final score appears at the end of each game.
  • Balance the teams: If necessary, assign the teams yourself to ensure the players' skill levels are well-balanced.
  • Troubleshooting: If a team gets disconnected or if a race doesn't start at the same time for everyone, simply restart the game.
