Stages of Life

A comparison of age groups in 2 parts. Part 1 is titled Youth–boy/girl and contains illustrations of a newborn, an infant or baby, a toddler, a child or kid, a preteen and a teenager or teen or adolescent.  Part 1 is titled Adulthood–man/woman and contains illustrations of a young adult, an adult or grown-up, a middle-aged person and an elderly person or senior citizen.

Descriptive Age Group Words

  • youthful
    Acting or looking young, behaving or feeling like a young person
  • mature
    Fully grown and developed, behaving like an adult
  • juvenile
    Someone under the age of 18 or describing a childish or immature behaviour
  • maturity
    The state of being fully grown or developed, or displaying adult behaviour and qualities
  • development
    Process of growing, changing or becoming more advanced over time
  • lifespan
    Total length of time that a person, animal or plant is alive
  • infancy
    Period of time from birth to about one year old
  • seniority
    Having a position for longer than others in a group or as a job
  • preschooler
    Child between three to five years old, not yet old enough for kindergarten
  • grade schooler
    Child who attends elementary school (aka grade shool)
  • high schooler
    Student who attends high school
  • first grader
    Student in Grade 1, and can be used for any grade: second grader, third grader and so on
  • to age
    To grow older, to show effects of growing older
  • to grow up
    To develop physically and mentally from a child into an adult
  • to mature
    To become fully grown, fully developed physically and mentally
  • to turn
    To reach a specific age, e.g. to turn 18

Generation Names

Names and years may vary from one source to another. The following are the commonly used expressions.
The different generations are presented in chronological order.

  • The Greatest Generation
    Born between 1901-1927, grew up during the Great Depression and may have fought in World War II or participated in the war effort
  • The Silent Generation
    Born between 1928-1945, grew up during World War II, came of age during the Cold War
  • Baby Boomers
    Born between 1946-1964 (aka Boomers) grew up during the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, named after the postwar birth rate increase
  • Generation X
    Born between 1965-1980 (aka Gen X, Latchey Kids, Forgotten Generation, Baby Busters), grew up through the end of the Cold War, energy crisis, rise of personal computers and video games
  • Millennials
    Born between 1981-1996 (aka Generation Y, Gen Y), came of age during the turn of the millennium, the rise of the Internet and social media
  • Generation Z
    Born between 1997-2012 (aka Gen Z, Zoomers, Digital Natives), first generation born entirely into the digital age with access to the Internet, smartphones, social media and instant global events
  • Gen Alpha
    Born between 2013 and present, entirely born in the 21st century, growing up with AI and global connectivity

Age Group Expressions

  • in their teens
    Between thirteen and nineteen years old, teenagers
  • a twenty-something
    Person between twenty and twenty nine years old, in their 20s. Can be used for every decade: a thirty-something, a forty-something and so on
  • sexagenarian
    Person between sixty and sixty-nine years old, in their 60s
  • septuagenarian
    Person between seventy and seventy-nine years old, in their 70s
  • octogenarian
    Person between eighty and eighty-nine years old, in their 80s
  • nonagenarian
    Person between ninety and ninety-nine years old, in their 90s
  • centenarian
    Person who is one hundred years old or older
  • green
    Lacking experience, not fully developed or trained
  • wet behind the ears
    Young and without much experience, naive or unsophisticated
  • spring chicken
    Young, inexperienced, or newly matured person
  • in one's prime
    Being in the best period of life, when a person is the strongest, most active, most successful or most capable
  • coming of age
    Transition from childhood to adulthood
  • over the hill
    Past your prime, no longer young and at your best
  • long in the tooth
    Old, or rather old, often used humorously
  • seasoned
    Experienced and skilled for having done something for a long time
  • weathered
    To have a worn, aged or hardened appearance due to exposure to the elements or hardship
  • getting on in years
    Growing old, advancing in age
  • golden years
    Period of old age, retirement, considered a time of enjoyment
  • past your prime
    No longer at peak condition or appearance
  • ripe old age
    Very old age, especially one reached after a long and full life
