Advanced In the City Vocabulary

  • main street
    Important streets in a city or town. Often where you find many shops, restaurants, and businesses.
  • block
    A group of buildings surrounded by streets. Often used to give directions, ex: walk 2 blocks that way and turn right.
  • back road
    Smaller, less-used roads usually going through towns or the countryside.
  • highway
    Large, main road built for fast travel over long distances, often connecting different cities or towns.
  • expressway
    A type of highway for fast travel. With limited access points, no traffic lights, no intersections and prohibited to pedestrians & bicycles.
  • overpass
    Type of bridge to allow roads or railways to pass over another. Common on highways and expressways.
  • traffic
    Vehicles and people moving on roads, generally used to refer to cars, trucks and busses.
  • traffic jam
    Slow moving traffic caused by a large number of vehicles on the road. Also caused by traffic accidents and breakdowns.
  • rush hour
    Time of day when traffic is at its heaviest. Generally when people are going to or returning from work or school.
  • lane
    Part of a street or road where you can drive. Cars change lanes to pass other cars.
  • bike lane
    Part of the street that is for bicycles only. Generally indicated with painted lines on the street. Also called bicycle lane, bike path, bicycle path.
  • bicycle lane
    Part of the street that is for bicycles only. Generally indicated with painted lines on the street. Also called bike lane, bike path, bicycle path.

Advanced Places Vocabulary

  • university
    A school people go to after high school to earn a degree (bachelor's, master's or PhD). Provides a more theoretical and research-focused education.
  • college
    A school people go to after high school to earn diplomas or certificates. Provides practical, hands-on, and career-oriented training.
  • campus
    Buildings and land around university, college, or school.
  • art gallery
    A place where works of art are displayed and are for sale.
  • concert hall
    Building with a stage designed for musical performances and shows.
  • theatre
    Building where live performances are presented on stage. Performances such as plays, ballets or musicals.
  • botanical garden
    Garden cultivated for scientific study, conservation, education and public display.
  • square
    A public space for people to gather. An open area usually surrounded by buildings.
  • beach
    Sandy or rocky area next to a body of water. Popular for swimming, sunbathing, and other recreational activities.
  • boardwalk
    Wooden walkway along a beach or water.
  • theme park
    A large park-like area with rides, attractions and shows designed around a theme.
  • aquapark
    Amusement park centered around water- related activities, such as waterslides, swimming pools and wave pools. Also called a “water park.”
  • stadium
    A large, open-air building with a big field or stage in the middle. Made for public events such as sports events, concerts, festivals or large ceremonies.
  • arcade
    A place with many coin-operated games, especially video games.
  • bus terminal
    A large building or area where many bus routes start and end.
  • nightclub
    A place for entertainment that is open late at night, usually with loud music, a dance floor and a bar. Also called a “club.”
  • florist
    Store selling flowers.
  • thrift store
    Store selling second-hand items.
  • antique shop
    Shop selling older or antique items that are valuable because of their age.
