Immediate Family

Immediate family presented in 2 parts. Part 1 consists of the parents with the words: dad, father, mom and mother, followed by the children with the words daughter and son. Part 2 represents relationships between the family members: partners or spouses, with the words husband and wife, followed by siblings with the words sister, brother and twins.

*The word spouse(s) is used when partners are married.

Extended Family

Extended family presented as a family tree. There are the great-grandparents: the great-grandfather and great-grandmother. Then there are the grandparents: the grandfather or grandpa and the grandmother of grandma. Next, the mother and father with their daughter and son, and the aunt and uncle with the cousins, or nephew and niece. The children are referred to by their great-grandparents as great-granddaughter and great-grandson, and they are related to the grandparents as granddaughter and grandson.

In-Laws and Stepfamily

The in-law family and stepfamily vocabulary. The in-laws include the father-in-law, mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law. The stepfamily is made of the stepparents: the stepfather and stepmother with their stepchildren: the stepdaughter, stepson, stepsister and stepbrother.
