Living Room Furniture Advanced Vocabulary

  • footstool
    A low piece of furniture used to rest your feet on while you are sitting in a chair.
  • end table
    A small table placed at the end or side of a sofa or an armchair.
  • side table
    A small table that is placed against a wall or beside a chair.
  • console table
    A long, narrow table that is usually placed against a wall or behind a sofa.
  • recliner
    A comfortable armchair with a back that leans backward and a footrest that pops up.
  • sectional
    A large sofa made of several separate parts (or sections) that can be put together in different shapes, like an "L" or a "U."
  • ottoman
    A piece of furniture that is soft, covered in fabric or leather, and has no back or arms. It can be used as a seat, a footrest or even a small table.
  • entertainment centre
    A large piece of furniture designed to hold a television and other electronic devices, such as gaming consoles, speakers and media players.
  • carpet
    A floor covering made of fabric that usually covers the entire floor of a room from wall to wall.
  • blinds
    A window covering made of many hard horizontal or vertical slats (strips) that can be tilted, opened or closed to block out light.
  • shades
    A single piece of fabric or soft material that rolls up or folds up to cover a window.

Kitchen & Dining Room Advanced Vocabulary

  • kitchen table
    A table located inside or right next to the kitchen used for daily, casual meals and activities.
  • dining table
    A large table, usually located in a separate room (the dining room), where people sit to eat formal or communal meals.
  • kitchen island
    A freestanding cabinet or counter located in the middle of a kitchen that is separate from the main counters and walls.
  • hutch
    A piece of furniture that has a set of shelves or cabinets sitting on top of a lower desk or sideboard. It is usually used to display dishes or store kitchen items. Also called a “china cabinet.”
  • china cabinet
    A piece of furniture that has a set of shelves or cabinets sitting on top of a lower desk or sideboard. It is usually used to display dishes or store kitchen items. Also called a “hutch.”
  • buffet
    A long, low piece of furniture with drawers and cabinets, usually placed against a wall in a dining room for storing and serving food. Also called a “sideboard.”
  • sideboard
    A long, low piece of furniture with drawers and cabinets, usually placed against a wall in a dining room for storing and serving food. Also called a “buffet.”
  • toaster oven
    A small electric oven that sits on a counter and is used to toast bread.
  • cooktop
    The flat top surface of a kitchen unit that contains the heating elements (burners) for cooking food in pots and pans.
  • range
    A single kitchen appliance that includes both a cooktop (the burners on top) and an oven (the baking space below).
  • range hood
    An appliance fixed above the range or cooktop that contains a fan to remove smoke, steam and odours while cooking. Also called a “kitchen hood.”
  • garbage disposal
    A machine located under the kitchen sink that shreds food scraps into tiny pieces so they can wash away through the plumbing.

Cleaning & Climate Control Advanced Vocabulary

  • steam cleaner
    An appliance that uses hot water vapour (steam) to deep clean and kill bacteria on surfaces like carpets, sofas and floors.
  • central vacuum system
    A cleaning system built into the walls of a house, where you connect a long hose to a wall outlet to suck up dust.
  • humidifier
    An appliance that adds moisture to the air by releasing a fine mist or steam.
  • dehumidifier
    An electrical appliance that removes moisture from the air to lower the humidity level in a room.
  • electric heater
    A device that converts electricity into heat to warm up a room or a specific area of a house.
  • space heater
    A small, portable appliance used to heat a single, enclosed area (a "space") rather than an entire building.
  • air purifier
    A portable appliance that removes contaminants (like dust, pollen, smoke and pet dander) from the air to improve breathing and health.
  • sump pump
    A small pump installed in the lowest part of a basement or crawl space, designed to pump water out of the house and away from the foundation.
  • water softener
    A filtration system that removes minerals (like calcium and magnesium) from your home's water supply to turn "hard water" into "soft water."
