Giving Directions Vocabulary

Expressions used to give directions such as go to, walk up, turn right and keep going.

*The expressions go up/down and walk up/down can also be used for movement on a flat surface, to walk along. In this case, the expressions are interchangeable and generally mean the same thing.
The most common examples of theses are:

  • Go up the street.
  • Walk up the street.
  • Go down the street.
  • Walk down the street.

Advanced Position Vocabulary

  • above
    At a higher place than something else, without touching it.
  • below
    In a lower position than something else.
  • underneath
    Directly below or under something, often covered by it.
  • beneath
    In a lower position, often not touching.
  • around
    Surrounding something or moving in a curved trajectory.
  • surrounding
    Present everywhere around something; to encircle it completely.
  • among
    In the middle of a group of many things or people. Used with countable nouns.
  • amid
    In the middle of or surrounded by something. Used with uncountable nouns.
  • adjacent to
    Near or next to something. Usually sharing a common wall, side or border.
  • upper
    Located in a higher position.
  • lower
    Situated below another part, object or place.
  • opposite
    Facing something from the other side.
  • facing
    Turned toward a stated direction.
  • parallel to
    Running alongside.
  • perpendicular to
    Crossing at a right angle.
  • diagonal
    A direction that is slanted or sideways.
  • throughout
    In every part of a place, from one end to the other.
  • within
    Inside the limits or boundaries of a space, area or distance.
  • previous
    Just before the one thing or place you are talking about.
  • following
    Just after the one thing or place you are talking about.

Advanced Directions Vocabulary

  • along
    Moving in a constant direction on or beside a line (like a path, a wall or a street).
  • straight ahead
    Continuing in the same direction you are currently facing without turning.
  • straight through
    To enter a place and come out the other side without turning or stopping.
  • toward
    Moving in the direction of a specific object, person or place. Synonym: towards.
  • towards
    Moving in the direction of a specific object, person or place. Synonym: toward.
  • across
    To move from one side of something to the opposite side.
  • away from
    Moving in the opposite direction of someone or something.
  • round
    Moving in a circle or around a corner to the other side.
  • beyond
    Moving past a specific limit or landmark.
  • upward
    Moving toward a higher place, position or level.
  • downward
    Moving toward a lower place, position or level.
  • off of
    Moving away from a position on a surface or a place.
  • against
    Touching something, like a wall, often for support.
  • on the edge
    Located on the boundary or rim.
  • at the rear
    Located at the very back of an object, building or vehicle.
  • clockwise
    Moving in the same direction as the hands of a clock.
  • counterclockwise
    Moving in the opposite direction as the hands of a clock.

Advanced Giving Directions Vocabulary

  • stay on
    To continue travelling along the same road, path or line without turning.
  • take the
    To choose and enter a specific road, exit or transportation route.
  • across from
    On the opposite side of a street, room or area.
  • next door to
    In the very next building or room; situated immediately beside another building or room.
  • on the corner of
    The physical position of a building or object, the location.
  • at the corner of
    The specific coordinate or intersection, the meeting point.
  • at the end of
    At the furthest point or the final part of a space.
  • in the middle of
    At the centre of an area; halfway between the beginning and the end.
  • halfway
    At or to the middle point of a distance or a path.
  • on your left
    To the left.
  • on your right
    To the right.
  • to the left
    Toward the left side.
  • to the right
    Toward the right side.
  • all the way
    Without stopping until the very end.
  • just past
    Immediately after a specific landmark or location.
  • right after
    Immediately after a specific landmark or location.
  • right before
    Immediately preceding a specific landmark, time or location.
  • make a U-turn
    To turn around in a half-circle to head back in the opposite direction.

Position & Directions Geography Vocabulary

  • North Pole
    The point on the Earth's surface that is furthest north.
  • South Pole
    The point on the Earth's surface that is furthest south.
  • Equator
    The imaginary circle around the Earth dividing it into the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
  • hemisphere
    One half of the Earth, usually divided by the Equator (North/South) or the Prime Meridian (East/West).
  • longitude
    The measurement of the distance East or West of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees.
  • latitude
    The measurement of distance North or South of the Equator, measured in degrees.
  • parallels
    Imaginary circles on the Earth's surface that are parallel to the Equator.
  • meridians
    Imaginary vertical lines on the Earth's surface that stretch from the North Pole to the South Pole.
  • Greenwich Meridian
    The imaginary vertical line designated as 0° longitude. Also called the “Prime Meridian.”
  • Prime Meridian
    The imaginary vertical line designated as 0° longitude. Also called the “Greenwich Meridian.’
  • Magnetic North
    North according to Earth’s magnetic field. The direction in which a compass needle points.
  • true north
    North according to Earth’s axis. Located at 90° N latitude.
