Hundreds Chart: 0 to 100

Article

Skip counting, or counting by increments, is an effective mental math technique for children. It is also a good way to develop strategies for counting objects in sets. Through skip counting, preschool and Cycle 1 students learn about numbers and, eventually, learn how to manipulate them in arithmetic operations. Print out this chart to help your child strengthen their mental math abilities.

Hundreds Chart for Skip Counting

This printable tool is designed to make it easier for your child to understand number sequencing between 0 and 100. As you know, making mental math fun and integrating operations practise into play are invaluable ways to counter math-related anxiety in your child while helping them become familiar with numbers.

Have your child colour in the chart by following the simple steps below. Important! One square can contain more than one colour!

  • Starting from zero (but without colouring in the zero, as it’s the starting square), skip count by twos and colour the numbers in the sequence in red (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.).
  • Skip count by fives and colour the numbers in the sequence in blue (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.).
  • Skip count by tens and colour the numbers in the sequence in yellow (10, 20, 30, 40, etc.).
  • Circle the numbers that have more than one colour.
  • Print the sheet again and repeat the exercise in descending order (starting from 101, but without colouring in 101, which is now the starting square).

Practise this mental math technique regularly with your child by skip counting groups of all kinds. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use collections of small toys, such as cars, dolls, or figurines. Ask your child to line them up in groups of 3, 5, or 10, then count how many there are in all by skip counting.
  • Use beads to practise skip counting. Ask your child to create patterned necklaces or bracelets by grouping beads of the same colour to create a pattern.
  • Use an analog clock to teach skip counting by increments of 5 by showing your child how to count the minutes around the clock face.
