The importance of studying science

Article

Science isn’t just for scientists. It’s useful for everyone and in all kinds of situations. Here are five reasons to help convince your child that it’s important to study science.

It helps you gain a better understanding of the world

Whether your child pursues higher education or vocational training, learning science will help them better understand the world around them. This is an invaluable skill in the job market. Science classes will teach them to do the following:

  • Be aware of the impact their choices have on the environment
  • Distinguish between fact and opinion
  • Verify their hypotheses
  • Understand the relationship between ecosystems
  • Etc.

It promotes communication and collaboration

In school, science projects often involve written reports or oral presentations. This work is usually done in groups and involves a lot of discussion. These activities help strengthen a number of skills:

  • How to work with others
  • How to express an opinion while being respectful of others
  • How to properly frame arguments and ideas
  • Etc.

It helps you become an informed citizen

Argumentative and critical thinking skills are essential. They help young people become informed citizens, informed voters, and knowledgeable consumers. Science classes can help your child develop these skills by teaching them to do the following:

  • Question the arguments and information presented to them
  • Reason
  • Observe
  • Seek out evidence
  • Draw conclusions
  • Etc.

It stimulates creativity

Science is an exacting discipline, but it also fosters creativity. Solving scientific problems requires the ability to examine issues from all angles, such as by doing the following:

  • Imagining possible chemical reactions
  • Coming up with inventions
  • Exploring underlying causes
  • Considering multiple hypotheses
  • Etc.

It prepares you for post-secondary education

Having an effective work method is a huge asset for post-secondary students, whether they’re in CEGEP, completing vocational training, or at university. Science classes will help prepare your teen for pursuing further studies by teaching them how to do the following:

  • Collect data
  • Evaluate statements
  • Understand different types of reports and analyses
  • Etc.
