5 reasons to keep up a routine during the pandemic

Article

There are many reasons why kids need a routine, even during a pandemic! Routines are reassuring; they give your child a sense of structure and can help facilitate at-home learning. We take a closer look at this topic in the following article.

Greater sense of security

When kids have a routine and a daily schedule, they’re freed from a certain amount of stress and feel more secure. That’s one of the reasons why teachers write the day’s schedule up on the board every morning. In addition to allowing students to anticipate upcoming activities and understand what’s expected of them, this seemingly trivial practice helps alleviate the stress of the unknown. All of these benefits are crucial to various aspects of a child’s development:

To help your child memorize new routines, take a page from their teacher’s book and display their daily schedule somewhere they can’t miss it:

  • On the refrigerator door
  • On their bathroom mirror
  • In the pantry
  • Etc.
Be careful!

With practice, your child can learn how to plan and prioritize their work. Check out our article on effective strategies that will help your child be more organized..

Improved sleep

Sleep is important for concentration, memory, and motivation, three factors that have a direct impact on academic perseverance. Regardless of how many hours of sleep your child needs to be at their best, maintaining a certain routine, even during the pandemic, can help them get a good night’s rest. Try asking them to do the following:

  • Go to bed at the same time every night
  • Go through the same sequence of activities each night before bed (e.g., take a bath, read for a bit, etc.)
  • Put away all screen devices at least an hour before bed
  • Etc.
Did you know

There should be no more than two hours’ difference between how much sleep your child gets on weekdays versus weekends. To learn more, read our article on how a good night’s sleep benefits academic performance.

Increased autonomy

A set routine will help your child become more autonomous, not to mention save you from having to repeat the same instructions a hundred times over. They’ll also get better at the following:

  • Remembering to bring the materials they need to their virtual classroom
  • Being on time for video calls
  • Starting certain tasks without your supervision
  • Taking breaks when they need to
  • Etc.

A more balanced lifestyle

A balanced lifestyle is essential for a person’s well-being, and being organized is one of the keys to achieving it. To help your child strike the right balance, you can encourage them to develop a routine, or several smaller routines, for different areas of their life:

  • Schoolwork
  • Studying
  • Diet
  • Sports and exercise
  • Personal activities
  • Etc.

Better preparedness for when schools reopen

Having a daily routine in place while schools are closed will make it easier for your child to adjust when it comes time to return to the classroom. A structured schedule will help them in several ways:

  • They’ll get used to following rules
  • They’ll become more autonomous
  • They’ll learn to better organize their time
  • Etc.
Be careful!
