To find the product of a multiplication, your child just has to place their finger on the square where the horizontal row and vertical column for each number in the equation intersect. Each intersection gives the product of a multiplication.
Here are a few ways to review multiplication tables:
- Colour in all the even numbers to show that skip counting by twos gives us the twos multiplication table.
- Colour in all the square numbers ( 2 X 2, 3 X 3, 4 X 4, etc.) to show that they form a diagonal line across the chart.
- Colour in the middle diagonal squares, and all the squares below them. The other half of the chart will be a mirror image! If you learn a multiplication in one direction, you’ll also know the answer of the multiplication in the other direction! This means, for example, that if your child memorizes 5 X 6 = 30, they already know that 6 X 5 = 30! This property is called commutativity: you can change the order of the terms in a multiplication (or addition) without changing the answer.
- Or, your child could colour in the chart following their own colour code. For example, they could use cool colours like blue, green, or purple for easy tables (2, 4, 5, 8, 10) and warm colours like yellow, orange, red, or fuchsia for more difficult ones (3, 6, 7, 9).
- Fill in the blank chart to test their memory.
