Checklist – Find out How Many Credits Are Needed to Earn a High School Diploma

Article

Is your child in Secondary III, IV, or V? Are you wondering whether they will have the credits they need to earn their high school diploma? Making sense of all the mandatory and elective credit options can be a challenge. Luckily, Alloprof has prepared a handy checklist to help you out!

How to Use the Checklist

  • When you receive your child’s final Secondary IV report card, write down the number of credits earned for each subject in the fourth column.
  • Write the total number of credits in the yellow box.
  • Check off the box in the fifth column when the minimum number of credits (indicated in the third column) have been earned. The green boxes represent the mandatory credits needed to earn a high school diploma (Secondary School Diploma – SSD).
  • Repeat the same exercise in Secondary V, taking note of the following:
    • If your child earns their course credits in Physical Education OR Culture and Citizenship in Québec, they have fulfilled this mandatory requirement.
    • For the elective courses section, add up the credits for the various optional courses.
    • To graduate, your child must earn at least 20 credits in Secondary V and at least 54 credits in Secondary IV and V combined.
Definition

Remember that one credit is the equivalent of about 25 hours of classroom or school activity. Depending on the total number of hours allocated to each course, your child could earn anywhere from 2 to 6 credits if they pass. In order to pass a course, students must have a final grade of 60% or higher.
