I felt a familiar tug in my chest as the children scampered onto the school buses and the staff gathered for one final goodbye before summer vacation. Everyone was in a festive mood. Even the bus drivers honked their horns in celebration!

The day wasn’t over yet: there were still a few kids at the school’s daycare, and not all the buses had finished delivering their precious cargo. But I was already feeling a profound sense of accomplishment.
Watching over 400 children isn’t an easy feat.
Ensuring their safety and well-being, day in and day out, is a big responsibility. Whether they’re in class, in the schoolyard, in the gym, in the cafeteria, on a field trip, or at the daycare, I make sure their days go smoothly.
With love and diligence, I take care of the children entrusted to me as if they’re my own.
Today, as I watched the yellow buses pull away, I had a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. I was happy. I love my job.
The children who live nearby also set off on their last walk home.
I waved to the parents who had come to greet their kids. I went to see the Grade 6 graduates as they struggled to say their goodbyes and looked on as the Grade 4 girls shared teary hugs.
I felt so lucky to have watched over these children throughout the year. I knew that all my efforts had paid off. They were so beautiful, genuine, and endearing!
I thought back to the times when I’d been exhausted and longed for an extra week of vacation; when I’d felt overwhelmed by my to-do list and long hours at the office. It all felt worth it!
I waited for everyone to leave before going back inside the school.
I took a detour to visit the daycare children waiting for their parents. They already seemed calmer than usual. Their upcoming vacation was well deserved.
It’s true—school is demanding.
There are rules to obey, skills to learn, and expectations to meet. Every child must adapt to their surroundings, follow a schedule, navigate their social sphere, and deal with conflicts. Students have a lot on their plate!
Finally, I joined my colleagues in the staff lounge.
We ordered chicken takeout and enjoyed our last meal of the year together. I knew that lunch would be brief, as the teachers had a lot of material to put away, and we all enjoy having a moment to ourselves before the day’s end.
I also knew they’d have plenty to do over the next few days: grade work and submit report cards, attend the annual review meeting, tidy the classrooms, rearrange the furniture for summer cleaning, and more.
Yes, I’m extremely proud of the past year!
Learning takes time. It can be a difficult process, with lots of ups and downs.
So many things can happen in a year, both at school and at home. Sometimes a student might feel like they’re taking one step forward and two steps back. But in reality, they’re continually making progress and growing as individuals.
Their small victories build up and eventually lead to success. Now, it’s time to celebrate, have fun, and learn outside the classroom!
Happy summer vacation, kids! Happy summer vacation, parents!
We’ll see you in August, refreshed and ready to take on the new challenges ahead!
