Before Reading/Listening/Viewing

Before we start reading our text, we have to do certain things to make sure we are ready for the response.

1. Set a Purpose

Ask yourself questions such as:
Am I going to be entertained?
Am I going to learn new facts?
Am I going to solve a mystery?
Student wondering what the intention in reading a text is.

2. Activate Prior Knowledge

Ask yourself questions such as:
Have I read stories about this before?
Have I learned about this in class?

3. Explore and Make Predictions

Ask yourself questions such as:
Can I get some clues from the book cover?
Is there a dedication?
Does the title set a mood or reveal anything intriguing?
Is there an author’s note? What does it tell the reader?
Are there images that give me some information about the type of text?
