The 20th century was punctuated by a number of events that shaped the world today. Politically, there were a number of regional conflicts, two worldwide conflicts (the First World War and the Second World War), and an ideological conflict between the Americans and the Soviets, called the Cold War, during which these two countries engaged in an arms race and also competed in the conquest of space.
