Multiply decimal numbers the same way as whole numbers.

Important!

You must count the number of digits after the decimal point of each of the factors to figure out where to place the decimal point in the answer.

2.53 × 3.1 = ?

  1. I write the multiplication in columns.

  1. I multiply the numbers without worrying about the decimal points.

  1. I count the number of digits after the decimal point in each of the factors.

    This number indicates how many digits to put after the decimal point in the answer.

    In this example, there are 3 digits.

  1. I place the decimal point in the answer.

    For this example, I put 3 digits after the decimal point.
