Advanced Insect & Bug Vocabulary

Advanced Insects

Bugs doing different actions such as flying, buzzing and jumping.

1 Scarabs are species of beetles.
2 Gnats are tiny flies that generally fly in small cloud-like groups.
3 Monarchs are a species of butterfly.
4 Moths are related to butterflies, but they are their own species. They generally fly at night.
5 Damselflies are similar to dragonflies but are a different species. They are smaller, thinner and fold their wings on their back when perching.

Advanced Other Bugs

  • tarantula
    Species of large hairy spiders.
  • millipede
    Small, long and thin worm-like bug with many, many tiny legs (between 40 and 400!).
  • pill bug
    Small bug with 14 legs and an armor-like shell. Also called a “roly-poly.”
  • roly-poly
    Small bug with 14 legs and an armour-like shell. Also called a “pill bug.”
  • tick
    Tiny 8-legged bugs that attach themselves to animal or human skin.
  • mite
    Tiny 8-legged bug, so small it in can live in house dust.

Advanced Insect & Bug Features

  • exoskeleton
    Hard shell on the outside of a bug's body.
  • segments
    Sections that join together to make a bug's body. Most insects have 3: head, thorax, abdomen.
  • thorax
    Middle part of an insect's body.
  • abdomen
    Back part of an insect's body.
  • mandibles
    Pair of jaw parts near an insect's mouth.
  • proboscis
    Long, stretchy tube on an insect's face.
  • colony
    Large group or family of insects or bugs that live and work together.
  • hive
    A living space built by insects, like a nest for the group.
  • beehive
    Man-made structure for beekeeping.
  • honeycomb
    Hexagonal wax structure built by bees inside their hive.
  • to lay eggs
    To reproduce with eggs.
  • to hatch
    To break out of the egg.
  • to swarm
    When a very large group of insects moves, flies or gathers together in one place.
  • to molt
    To shed or drop the old outer shell, to grow a new one.
