A sheet of paper vs a piece of paper vs a paper

The word paper, as the material isn't countable. The use of a sheet/piece allows the quantity of paper to be counted.

A sheet of paper and a piece of paper are synonym expressions. They both refer to a whole sheet of paper.

The expression a paper refers to a document a student writes as a class assignment, like a report or an essay.

  • tempera
    Fast-drying non-permanent paint. Popular in classrooms because it is inexpensive.
  • acrylic
    Fast-drying permanent paint with a similar brilliance and density as oil paint.
  • finger paint
    Paint made for use with hands instead of paintbrushes.
  • felt-tip marker
    Marker with a point made of felt or fibre that contains ink.
  • permanent marker
    Marker using long-lasting ink that doesn’t wash off easily.
  • sketchbook
    Book with blank pages made for drawing.
  • sketchpad
    Pad with blank pages, made for drawing. Sometimes called a “drawing pad.”
  • scrapbook
    Book with blank pages made to paste or attach things, like photos, drawings, notes, and other mementos.
  • glue gun
    Handheld tool that uses a heated element to melt solid sticks of glue.

    Flexible wire covered in soft, fuzzy material that can be easily bent, twisted and cut into different shapes.
