5 reasons to trust your child’s teacher

In Quebec, teachers are trained and qualified. They know the curriculum inside and out. They’re masters of didactic and pedagogical strategies, and that’s not all. Here are five good reasons why you should trust them. Of course, this list could be even longer!

They’re involved

Your child’s teacher works hard and is invested in their relationships with their students. They also work with the school team to find solutions to the various challenges that some children may encounter. For example, they do the following:

They act as a bridge between you and the school

As parents, we sometimes get the impression that our child might actually be two different people: there’s the child we know at home, and then another child who acts completely differently at school. No matter what happens, your child’s teacher always knows what to do. Here are a few examples:

  • They send messages to parents (e.g., using your child’s agenda or the school portal)
  • They schedule parent-teacher meetings
  • They prepare your child’s first assessment
  • They include comments in report cards
  • They return parents’ calls
  • Etc.

They know how to help their students learn

Learning can be fun, even if some students don’t think so at first. No matter how your child feels about learning, teachers do everything they can to make their teaching enjoyable and stimulating. For instance, they may do the following:

  • Find ways to switch up their teaching methods
  • Acknowledge each student’s progress
  • Develop a variety of strategies to increase students’ self-confidence
  • Foster students’ autonomy
  • Encourage teamwork
  • Etc.

They act as a cultural mediator

As agents of knowledge, teachers go the extra mile and use their imagination to integrate a cultural dimension into their teaching. It’s true! As educators, they:

  • Explain theories and discuss the origin of certain concepts and ideas
  • Draw links between different subjects
  • Decorate their classroom according to the seasons, holidays, etc.
  • Encourage students to talk about themselves, their backgrounds, and their individual cultures
  • Inspire a love of reading
  • Experiment with different art forms
  • Etc.

They build a relationship with your child (and other children too)

A sense of belonging is a key factor in academic perseverance. To feel that they belong, your child needs to take part in school life, but also develop a bond with their teacher. Teachers are keenly aware of their role and do everything they can to build a solid foundation with each student. To achieve this, they do the following:

  • Listen
  • Express interest in students’ ideas and opinions
  • Recognize their achievements
  • Show patience and tact in their choice of words and general attitude
  • Etc.
