Freedmen / to set free

Slave to whom the master has given freedom.

Peak

The moment when something is at its best, at its most powerful.

Praetor's Edict

Set of laws published by the emperor Hadrian in 131.

​Empire
 

A group of countries under a central authority. Commanded by an emperor.

State

Government with authority over a territory. Synonym for country.

​Gladiator
(h1427)

Gladiator fights were very popular in Rome. A gladiator is a man who fights in order to entertain spectators. He is very often a prisoner of war.

Imperialist

Refers to a state that exercises domination.

Influence

Power (social, political, economic or cultural) of one group over another.

​Institution

Organisation with official status, whose role is specific and recognised (e.g. the House of Commons).

Legion

A Roman military unit of around 6,000 soldiers known as legionnaires.

Law of the Twelve Tables
(h1428)

The first Roman code of law, written in 451 BC. Takes its name from the fact that it is engraved on twelve bronze tablets.

Mercenary

​Someone who fights for a foreign government in exchange for a salary.

​Monarchy

A political system in which the ruler is a king or a queen.

Patricians

Refers to upper-class citizens (nobles, the wealthy).

Pax Romana

Roman peace. A period of peace during which the Roman Empire was not invaded nor pillaged.

Peregrines

Refers to foreigners living in Rome.

Germanic people or commoners
(h1429)

Different commoners or people living in Northern Europe.

Plebeians
(h1427)

Refers to the average citizens, those who made up the majority of the population of Rome.

Landowners

Refers to people who own land.

Rebellion

​When a group of people revolt and decide to fight against their own government.

Census
(h1427)

Operation launched by the authorities of a country to determine the number of people living on its territory.

​Diplomatic representation

When ambassadors from different countries talk to each other so that the countries make decisions that please everyone.

Republic

A democratic political system in which the commoners or the people are represented by elected representatives.

Romanized
(h1430)

Who adopted the elements of Roman culture.

​Tactician
(h1428)

A person whose job it is to come up with techniques and strategies to gain the upper hand in a battle.
