Calculating Volume - Cycle 3

| Mathematics

How is Volume Calculated?

To calculate the volume of a prism, multiply length by width by height.

Box illustrating the three dimensions used to calculate volume: length, width, and height.

Be careful!

Example of a measurement unit that must be converted.

When calculating volume, make sure that only one unit of measurement is used. If the units of measurements are different, convert all measurements before proceeding with the calculation.

Read the concept sheet Converting Units for Measuring Length to learn how.

Example:

Convert 1 m to dm to have a single unit of measurement.

Rule

Follow these steps to calculate the volume of a solid.

  1. Verify that the measurements are given using the same unit. If not, convert them.
  2. Multiply length by width by height to find the volume.
Example

What is the volume of this chest?

Exemple du calcul du volume-1

  1. I verify that the measurements are given using the same unit. If not, I convert them.

The concept sheet Converting Units for Measuring Length can help me if needed.

  2. Since two of the three measurements are in cm, I convert 1.2 dm into cm.
