How do you decompose a number?

Important!

It is important to understand place value before learning how to decompose numbers.

For a reminder, read the concept sheet on Place Value.

A number can be decomposed using objects or pictures.

Example
Examples of a decomposed number using a drawing or objects.

A number can be decomposed according to the positions of its digits.

Example

76

7 Tens + 6 Ones = 76

231

2 Hundreds + 3 Tens + 1 One = 231

Tu peux décomposer un nombre selon la valeur de chacun de ses chiffres.

Example

76

10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 76

or

70 + 6 = 76

231

100 + 100 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 1 = 231

or

200 + 30 + 1 = 231
