What is a pattern?

Definition
  • A pattern is a series of repeating objects or numbers.
  • A regular sequence is a list of objects or numbers that repeats in a regular or predictable way.
Example

Here is a regular sequence of objects:

Exemple de suite logique

The pattern of this regular sequence is:

Exemple d’une régularité

Example

Here is a sequence of numbers:

Exemple de suite de nombres

The pattern of this sequence is + 2.

How do you find the pattern of a non-numerical sequence?

You find the pattern of a regular sequence by looking at what is being repeated.

Tip

To help you find the pattern in a regular sequence, you can say the names of the objects out loud and circle the repeating elements.

Example of a regular sequence

How do you find the pattern of a numerical sequence?

Example

Exemple d’une suite de nombres - 1

To identify what is being repeated (the pattern), I look for the jump between each number.

To learn what a jump is, I can read the Skip Counting concept sheet.

Exemple d’une suite de nombres - 2

The pattern in this example is + 3.

I can add numbers to the sequence as long as they follow the pattern.

Exemple d’une suite de nombres - 3

Be careful!

Patterns can also be made up of a set of different jumps.

Exemple d’une suite de nombres - 4

The pattern of this sequence is + 10, - 5.
