What Is Density?

Definition

Density |(\rho)| is the ratio between the quantity of matter of a substance and the space it occupies.

In short, it’s the ratio between a substance’s mass and its volume.

Formula

|\rho =\dfrac{m}{V}|

where

Density can be expressed using other units, such as |\text{g/cm}^{3}| and |\text{kg/m}^{3}|.

A dense substance, such as a diamond, has a higher density than a less dense substance, like oil. The density of a diamond is 3.52 grams per millilitre, while the density of oil is 0.92 grams per millilitre. The particles of a dense substance are closer together. Therefore, there are more particles in a given volume, and the mass of that volume is larger. Conversely, the particles of a low-density substance are farther apart. Therefore, there are fewer particles in a given volume, and the mass of that volum
