Clothing Materials

  • cotton
    Made from plants, soft and fluffy. Ex: t-shirts, socks, dresses
  • wool
    Made from animal hair (sheep, goats), soft and warm. Ex: sweaters, mittens, suits
  • leather
    Made from animal skin, tough and flexible. Ex: shoes, belts, jackets
  • denim
    Made from cotton, strong and sturdy. Ex: jeans, jackets, overalls
  • silk
    Made from cocoons, soft and shiny. Ex: shirts, dresses, pyjamas
  • polyester
    Made from plastic, strong and wrinkle-free. Ex: windbreakers, suits, swimsuits
  • fur
    Made from animal hair, warm and durable. Ex: coats, hats, earmuffs
  • velvet
    Made from silk, cotton and synthetic materials, soft and smooth. Ex: pants, jackets, skirts
  • lace
    Made by weaving yarn, delicate and decorative. Ex: dresses, underwear, shirts
  • spandex
    Made from cotton and polyester, very flexible. Ex: sports clothing, underwear, leggings

    Follows the current fashion or style.
  • trendy
    Follows the current fashion or style, informal.
  • classic
    Elegant, versatile and quality clothing that does not go out of style.
  • modern
    Follows the latest trends, styles and designs.
  • vintage
    From a past time period.
  • thrifted
    Pre-owned, purchased from secondhand stores.
  • loose
    Not fitted to the body, not tight.
  • tight
    Fitted very close to the body, often implies they are uncomfortable to wear.
  • comfortable
    Makes you feel relaxed when worn, implies loose fitting and ease of movement.
  • baggy
    Loose-fitting, appearing too large for the person wearing them.
  • tailored
    Custom-made to fit a person.
  • v-neck
    A neckline that makes a V-shape.
  • scoop neck
    A curved and wide neckline.
  • turtle neck
    A high, close-fitting collar that covers most of the neck.
  • boat neck
    A wide horizontal neckline.
  • strapless
    Having no straps to hold it in place, typically a dress.
  • to wear
    To have clothing or accessories on your body.
  • to put on
    To place the clothing on yourself, to get dressed.
  • to dress
    To place the clothing on yourself, to put on clothes.
  • to take off
    To remove clothing.
  • to undress
    To remove clothing
  • to try on
    To put a piece of clothing on to see how it fits you or if you like it.
  • to zip
    To close, fasten using a zipper.
  • to unzip
    To open, unfasten using a zipper.
  • to button
    To close, fasten using buttons.
  • to unbutton
    To open, unfasten using buttons.

    To close by joining 2 sides using a zipper, buttons, snaps, a belt or velcro, for instance.
  • to unfasten
    To undo or open zippers, buttons, snaps, belts or velcro.
  • to match
    To combine items of clothing together according to their colours, styles or patterns.
  • to fit
    To be the right size and shape for your body.
  • to wash
    To clean using detergent and water.
  • to fold
    To bend neatly and make flat.

    To place clothes on a hanger.

    To remove wrinkles or floods from clothing using a heated appliance.

    To join pieces of fabric together using a needle and thread.
