Distributive determiners (also called distributive adjectives) are used to refer to individual people or things. They can also refer to a group of people or things within a group.

Examples

Both

Person holding 2 tools.

I use both these tools every day.

Both refers to: two things or people.

Each

Individual people.

Each of us needs to put in an extra effort today.

Each refers to: one person or thing separately.

Every

All in a group.

We need every possible assistant for this project.

Every refers to:all people or things in a group.

Either

Axe or chainsaw.

Choose either the chainsaw or the axe to complete this task.

Either refers to: one or the other.

Neither

Not an axe or chainsaw.

In this situation, neither tool would help.

Neither refers to: none of them.

Neither… nor…

Not this one axe or this one chainsaw.

They chose neither the axe nor the chainsaw.

Neither… nor… refers to: not one or the other.

Half

Half the building material.

Building a camp will require half the remaining wood in our warehouse.

Half refers to: 50% or ½ of the total quantity.

All

Man lifting beam.

I used all my strength to lift this beam.

All refers to: the total quantity.
