Definition

Words classes are also known as parts of speech. These are the categories under which words are classified according to their grammatical uses.

Note that words are often categorized under several classes.

Nouns

A noun is a word that represents people, places and things.

The sentence: “Bob the astronaut has a job on the Moon base.” There is an astronaut waving, an astronaut working at a desk and a moon base.

Adjectives

An adjective is a word describing or modifying a noun or a pronoun.

The sentence: “Bob used red paint on the old rover. It looks great.” There is an astronaut holding a paint can next to a lunar vehicle.

Determiners

Determiners are words that mark nouns. Following a determiner is automatically a noun or a noun phrase.

The sentence: “In the morning, Astronaut Bob has a freshly brewed cup of coffee.’’ An astronaut is holding a cup of steaming hot coffee.

Pronouns

A pronoun is a word used to replace a noun.

The sentence: “Bob lost his keys. He loses them all the time.” An astronaut is trying to get into his locked lunar vehicle, not noticing his keys on ground.

Verbs

 A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being

The sentence: “Bob feeds the mooncats, He really enjoys it.” An astronaut is filling bowls with animal food.

Adverbs

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective or an another adverb.

The sentence: “Bob absolutely believes he is truly funny.” An astronaut is laughing out loud while others are being impatient.

Prepositions

A preposition is a short word used to link words together. It indicates time, place or direction.

The sentence: “Since getting a job on the Moon, Bob walks to work.” An astronaut is walking towards a lunar base.

Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that links words, phrases or clauses.

The sentence: “Bob likes spaghetti and chocolate, but not together!” A plate of spaghetti next to a chocolate bar with a happy face. A spaghetti plate covered in chocolate with a grossed out face.

Interjections

An interjection is a short word or expression used to express reactions or feelings.

The sentence: “Watch out! Ow! Hey! Come on!” A lunar vehicle is dragging an astronaut around with its robot arm.
