What Is Drafting?

Drafting is the 2nd step of the writing process.  When you create your first draft, you write down your main ideas without too much focus on details.

Drafting Process

Writing Down Your Ideas

  • Focus on content, not grammar or spelling.

  • It is supposed to be a rough draft, not perfect.

  • Stay flexible to allow changes and improvements.

  • Keep in mind the text’s purpose and audience.

  • Organize ideas with an outline from the prewriting step.

Drafting at a Glance

A summary of the drafting process. When drafting a text, focus on the content. You are making a rough draft, not a finished version of the text. Stay flexible, rearrange and reorganize ideas as much as you need. Keep in mind the purpose of the text and the audience.
