Measuring Elapsed Time - Cycle 2

| Mathematics

What is the Duration of an Event?

Definition

The duration of an event is the time elapsed from its start to its finish.

Example:

I’m on the plane between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. My flight has a duration of 4 hours.

Measuring the elapsed time from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

How to Measure the Duration of an Event Using a Clock?

To measure the duration of an event, look at the hour hand. When the hour hand makes a full turn around the clock, it means 60 minutes (1 hour) have elapsed.

Be careful!

The minute hand moves as the hour hand advances. Therefore, the minutes hand can also be used to help measure the hours.

To remember how a clock works, see the concept sheet Telling the Time on a Clock.

Example

How long is my badminton lesson if it starts at 6:15 a.m. and ends at 7:45 a.m.?

Measuring the elapsed time from 6:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

From 6:15 a.m. to 7:15 a.m., the hour hand makes a full turn around the clock. Therefore, one hour has elapsed.
1 h from 6:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
From 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. the hour hand moves ahead 30 minutes.
