Measuring Lengths - Cycle 2

| Mathematics

How do I read a measurement in millimetres on a ruler?

On a ruler, the shortest marks (lines) and the medium-sized marks indicate millimetres (mm).

Les lignes des mm sur une règle.

The distance between each of the short marks is 1 mm.

Example

On a ruler, 1 mm looks like the following.

1 mm sur une règle.

Be careful!

The 5 mm mark is a bit longer so that it can be found more easily.

5 mm sur une règle.

Rule
  1. I place the ruler along the length being measured. I make sure that the 0 mark is at the beginning of the length.
  2. To find the total measurement, I look at the line on the ruler where the measurement ends.
Example

What is the length of the following line in mm?

Exemple de mesure en mm-1

  1. I place the ruler along the length being measured. I make sure that the 0 mark is at the beginning of the length.
Exemple de mesure en mm-2
  1. To find the total measurement, I look at the line on the ruler where the measurement ends.
Exemple de mesure en mm-3

The line measures 4 mm.
