What is the place value of a number?

Definition

A place value is the value of a digit in a number, according to its place or position.

Examples:

3473 is in the hundreds place.
It has a value of 3 hundreds, 30 tens, or 300 ones.
8533 is in the ones place.
It has a value of 3 ones.

How do we find the place value of a number?

To help you determine the place value of a digit, you can use a place value chart.

To determine the total number of tens in a number, observe how many tens fit into the number.

Example:

In the number 325, there are 32 tens.
