Drawing Horizontal and Vertical Lines

Concept sheet | Science and Technology

Here's how to draw a straight horizontal or vertical line in a technical drawing. The first step before drawing is to tape the sheet of paper to the drawing board.

Drawing a Horizontal Line

The following tools and materials are required to draw a horizontal line:

A sheet of paper fixed to the drawing board with sticky paper, a T-square and a lead pencil.
  1. Place the T-square against the edge of the drawing board.
Right-handed people should press the T-square against the left edge of the drawing board, while left-handed people should press it against the right edge.

  2. Slide the T-square up or down so that its top edge is where the horizontal line has to be drawn and then hold it firmly in place.

  3. Gently draw the line along the top edge of the T-square with the lead pencil.
Right-handed people should trace from left to right, tilting the pencil slightly to the right, while left-handed people should trace from right to left, tilting the pencil slightly to the left.

A left-handed person uses a T-square to draw a horizontal line. The sheet of paper is attached to a drawing board.

Drawing a Vertical Line

The following tools and materials are required to draw a vertical line:

A sheet of paper fixed to the drawing board with sticky paper, a T-square, a set square and a lead pencil.
  1. Place the T-square against the edge of the drawing board.
Right-handed people should press the T-square against the left edge of the drawing board, while left-handed people should press it against the right edge.

  2. Slide the T-square up or down so that its top edge is slightly below where the vertical line has to be drawn and then hold it firmly in place.

  3. Place the set square with one edge against the top edge of the T-square.
Right-handed people should have the vertical edge of the square to the left, while left-handed people should have the vertical edge to the right.

  4. Slide the set square so that its vertical edge is where the line has to be drawn and hold it firmly in place.

  5. Gently draw the line along the vertical edge of the square with the lead pencil.
