Definition

In technical drawing, graphic communication is the set of visual elements used to represent a technical object, its operation and manufacturing.

These visual elements can be lines, curves, arrows, other symbols, colours and so on.

Depending on what you want to represent (operation of a technical object, manufacturing of a technical object, etc.), graphic communication can be used to produce different types of engineering drawings and diagrams.

Depending on the diagram or manufacturing drawing chosen to produce a technical drawing, different forms of representation can be used.

Example

To represent the operation of a pair of scissors, a design plan is created.

Here are some graphic communication elements in the diagram: 

  • two hollow arrows representing the force to be applied to close the pair of scissors; 
  • two double curved black arrows representing the bidirectional rotational motion of the scissor blades; 
  • two black lines representing the slides and handles; 
  • a small black disk representing the rivet on the pair of scissors.

Graphic communication follows specific rules. In order to properly represent the manufacturing process of a technical object, its dimensions must respect a precise scale and comply with dimensioning rules.

In addition, specific measuring instruments and techniques are required.
