What Is Puberty?

Definition

Puberty is a period of physical and psychological change.

Puberty lasts about 4 years, and starts between the ages of 8 and 14. Its role is to transform a child’s body into an adult body, in order to reproduce.

General Physical Changes

The physical changes that everyone goes through during puberty are increased sebum production that can cause acne,  voice change, genital growth, increased sweating that can cause body odour, a growth spurt and the development of body hair.

Physical Changes During Female Puberty

The female-specific physical changes during puberty are breast development, a widening of the pelvis (hips), the appearance of white discharge that cleans and protects the vagina and the start of menstruation (periods).

Physical Changes During Male Puberty

The male-specific physical changes during puberty are broadening of the shoulders, more frequent uncontrolled erections, experiencing the first ejaculation and muscle development.
