Definition

An adverb of place explains where something happened. It can also indicate direction, distance and position.

Tip

Adverbs of place are usually placed after the main verb. They are seldomly used before the main verb, mostly by writers. The placement of the adverb does not affect the general meaning of the sentence.

Margaret goes up the stairs to reach her den.

Placing the adverb after simply states where she is going.

Outside her house, there was a koi pond.

Placing the adverb before focuses on where the koi pond is located.
