How to Convert Units of Measure for Time

In order to convert units of measure for time, it is important to understand the relationships or equivalencies between these units of measure.

Example

Convert 5 weeks to days (d).

  1. I identify the equivalency between the units of measure.

For a reminder, I can refer to the concept sheet Units of Time.

 1 week = 7 days
  1. Since there are 5 weeks, I add 7 days 5 times or I multiply 5 by 7 days.
7 d + 7 d + 7 d + 7 d + 7 d = 35 d
or
5 × 7 d = 35 d

5 weeks is equivalent to 35 days.

Example

Convert 4 hours (hr) 35 minutes (min) into minutes.

  1. I identify the equivalency between the units of measure.

For a reminder, I can refer to the concept sheet Units of Time.

1 hour = 60 minutes
  1. Since there are 4 hours, I add 60 minutes 4 times or I multiply 4 by 60 minutes.
60 min + 60 min + 60 min + 60 min = 240 min
or
4 × 60 min = 240 min
  1. Then, I add the remaining 35 minutes.
240 min + 35 min = 275 min

4 hours and 35 minutes is equivalent to 275 minutes.
