Insulation

Concept sheet | Science and Technology

Insulation is an electrical function performed by any component of a system that prevents the passage of current. The purpose of this function is to prevent contact between certain conductors, which could cause a short circuit.

Definition

A short circuit is an electrical issue that causes a sudden increase in current. It can damage the electrical components of a circuit and presents a fire hazard.

Electrical components responsible for insulation are generally made from materials with poor electrical conductivity, such as plastics and ceramics.

Example

In this electrical outlet box, the sheath that covers the conductor wires, the wire connector caps and the box itself are all made of plastic, which is an insulating material. Together, they provide insulation.
