How to prepare students for the technological analysis section of the Sec. IV science exam

Article

In Secondary IV, the Science and Technology (ST) and Applied Science and Technology (AST) uniform examinations require students to analyze technological situations and a technical object. Being well prepared is key to doing well on the technological analysis section, which involves a technical object. Fortunately, Alloprof has several resources to help your students! In this article, we explain how to take full advantage of these handy tools.

Study using a worksheet

Alloprof is continuously developing content to help Quebec students succeed in school. In our educational content section, there is a concept sheet on the technological analysis of a technical object, as seen in ST and AST uniform examinations. Students can use the concept sheet to do the following:

  • Read through a technological analysis and learn about the required tools
  • Review the Secondary IV ST and AST concepts likely to be evaluated.
  • Find strategies and tips for watching the technical object animated video that will play on loop during the exam
  • Review specific examples that explain key concepts, such as the following:
    • Figuring out how the object’s parts interact
    • Matching the 3D parts shown in the animated video with their 2D drawings
    • Understanding how electric currents and on-off switches are represented
    • Determining how the parts connect by observing the object’s disassembly
    • Reading the nomenclature tables on the 2D drawings
    • Understanding the shape of each part, figuring out how they detach, and interpreting the highlighted sections
  • Pay attention to the sample questions in the Student Booklet and practise using technological language
  • Understand exploded general drawings, which will be on the exam
  • Etc.

Practise with technological analysis simulations

The technological analysis simulations provided on the practice sheets are an excellent way to prepare and avoid surprises during the exam. Each simulation includes a 3D video of a technical object in motion, from various angles. It shows the mechanisms that operate when the object is turned on, its electrical operation, and its disassembly.

Practice sheets also include the object’s 2D plans and interactive exercises to test your knowledge. The questions differ from one test to another to help students improve with each round. Here are two simulations students can try:
